A modular, hands-on syllabus engineered to teach systems administrators how to extract, audit, and analyze mission-critical infrastructure data.
Six Comprehensive Operational Modules
This curriculum is designed to move beyond simply downloading and launching an executable. Participants work through real lab data sets to master security credential scoping, deep inspection of all telemetry tabs, and scheduled automation workflows.
Module 1: Authentication & Safe API Operations
Configuring scoped read-only service accounts in vCenter, validating SSL/TLS thumbprints, and understanding the performance footprint of VI API inventory queries against production clusters.
Module 2: Complete Virtual Machine Inventory (vInfo, vCPU, vMemory)
Cataloging CPU sockets, cores, RAM allocations, guest memory ballooning metrics, out-of-date VMware Tools instances, and unassigned hardware devices.
Module 3: Storage Hygiene & Datastore Capacity (vDisk, vDatastore)
Deciphering thick vs. thin disk provisioning ratios, calculating overcommit thresholds, identifying dormant disks, and auditing multipathing across storage fabrics.
Module 4: Snapshot Life-Cycle & Orphan Detection (vSnapshot, vHealth)
Detecting snapshots exceeding operational age thresholds, finding orphaned disk files unattached to running VMs, and triaging vHealth error flags.
Module 5: Network & Host Configuration Verification (vNetwork, vHost)
Auditing distributed virtual switches, standard switches, disconnected virtual NICs, VLAN tagging consistency, and ESXi hypervisor build version parity.
Module 6: Unattended CLI Execution & PowerShell Batch Integration
Automating recurring weekly audit exports via CLI flags (-s, -u, -p, -c), encrypting connection parameters, and generating clean multi-tab Excel reports.
